Recently Walt Fields passed away in Illinois. Walt grew up in Batesville where his brother, Bernie, still lives. Walt was quite an athlete while at Batesville High School where he specialized in basketball and baseball. Since Walt was in high school in the early 1940’s, his athletic career was interrupted by WWII.Walt’s first post-high school career was to play baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ organization. After this, he went to Butler University where he played basketball and baseball under the Legendary Tony Hinkle. He then went on to teaching and coaching which lasted for 40 years at various high schools and colleges. He is a member of the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame, the Butler University Hall of Fame, and the Marian University Wall of Fame. Recently a scholarship was started under his name at Marian.Earlier this year I had the opportunity to talk to Walt on the phone. He still had his booming voice and sense of humor. A great Batesville athlete has passed on.
