Rapinoe refused to back down from the comments when she gave a news conference on Thursday, on the eve of the USA’s quarter-final against host nation France.“I stand by the comment I made about not going to the White House, with the exception of the expletive, my mum wouldn’t be very happy about that,” Rapinoe told reporters.“Considering how much time and effort and pride that we take in the platform that we have,” she said, “I don’t think that I would go and I would encourage my teammates to think about giving that platform or having that co-opted by an administration that doesn’t feel the same way and doesn’t fight for the same things we fight for.”Trump said on Wednesday that he hadn’t yet invited the team but that he was now doing so.“I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose,” he said, calling himself “a big fan” before adding that Rapinoe “should WIN first before she TALKS! State minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid addresses a press briefing at the power and energy ministry’s conference room in Dhaka on Wednesday. Photo: PIDState minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid on Wednesday said the country’s gas fields have already started depleting as forecasted and the entire gas will be exhausted within the next 8-9 years. He made the remarks while addressing a press briefing at the power and energy ministry’s conference room to unveil the programmes marking the ‘National Energy Security Day‘ to be observed on Thursday, reports UNB.The energy division and its subsidiary bodies chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day to commemorate the historic decision taken by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to take over operation of five gas fields from Shell Oil at a cost of 4.5 million pound on 9 August 1975.The National Energy Security Day programmes include bringing out rallies, carrying out a campaign through mobile phone SMS for the economic use of energy and holding a seminar by Petrobangla.Nasrul Hamid informed that one or two gas fields have already got depleted and others are in the process of depletion.“All the fields in the country will face complete depletion within 8-9 years because we don’t have any new discovery in recent years. This happened in many countries as a natural course,” he told newsmen. At present, the country has a total of 23 gas fields at different locations which produce about 2,700 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) against the demand of 3,700 mmcfd, leaving a shortage of 1,000 mmcfd. The state minister noted that the government has undertaken a programme to drill 108 wells at different gas fields to increase the gas production. So far, drilling works for only eight wells have awarded to different contractors, but the result is not very positive as each of these wells yields 15-20 mmcfd gas which is not cost effective. He said the plan for drilling the rest 100 wells are now being revisited as contractors are asking for $30 million which is costly.Nasrul Hamid said the global energy market scenario is changing fast and new dynamics are coming up with new ideas. “That is why we’ve to take decisions very cautiously. The government is now trying to import LNG (liquefied natural gas) to meet the energy demand.”Responding to a question, Nasrul said the LNG will push up the gas prices.“But, I hope, the energy regulatory body will not take any ridiculous decision about gas price hike which will go beyond the affordable capacity of the people.”
Kolkata: Bengal government has brought about significant improvement in sectors like agriculture and aqua culture in the state. For the first time, the concept of aqua retailing has also been introduced in the state.Subrata Mondal, chief general manager of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) said one of the biggest problems the government has been facing is the fragmented land. The density of population in the state also affects the agricultural sector. Despite the challenges, the Bengal government has gone through significant improvement in the sector. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeNABARD extends financial assistance to the state government for its various rural projects. It has 31 regional offices and 2,000 consultancy centres for the better implementation of rural projects. It also provides funds for construction of rural roads and bridges in the state. NABARD plays a strong role in the rural and farming economy of the state. There are approximately more than 71 lakh families under the agriculture sector in the state. Bengal records the highest amount of paddy production and comes second highest in potato production. Emphasis is being laid on the development of sustainable aqua culture in order to prevent death Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedof fishes. “The population density and fragmented land are the major challenges for the state. Hence, we are advising banks for group mode finance for Bengal. It is the only state which has 100 percent financial support from NABARD in the cooperative sector. Agriculture can move forward by merging production and marketing together. To combat various issues related to climate change, four different funds have been generated in the country by NABARD out of which two projects are operational in Bengal,” Mondal said. What is most important here is that the average annual income of farmers in the state has gone up threefold in 2017-18 financial year than what it was seven years ago. According to Agriculture department sources, the average annual income of a farmer now stands at Rs 2,91,000 in 2017-18 financial year, while it stood at Rs 2,39,123 in 2016-17. During 2010-11, the average annual income of a farmer remained Rs 91,000. This has become possible due to various social schemes introduced by the Mamata Banerjee government to improve the socio-economic conditions of the farmers across the state. While the Centre aims at doubling the farmers’ income by 2022, the Bengal government has already increased the income level of farmers three times in the state. The present government has started distributing certified seeds to the farmers at 50 percent subsidised rates and also giving a platform to sell off their produce directly at various state government-managed outlets. No wonder that the food production in the state has gone up by a huge margin.
